Hopeless

WALT :

- Use paragraphs to link similar ideas together.

- Write in structured, well developed paragraphs that flow well from one to the next within the text.

- Use linking words and phrases to link paragraphs for effect.

This week in Room 6 we learnt about paragraph writing. We had to create two or more paragraphs to describe a picture and write a backstory. We first brainstormed words using the Five Senses : See, Hear, Feel, Taste and Smell.

What I enjoyed was learning about paragraph writing. 

What I found hard was using the correct sentence structure. 

Next time I will try and make the sentences flow from one to the next. 

Hopeless 

The ragged man sits outside a wooden cabin by himself, alone, miserable and exhausted. As he waits in silence, he can hear the leaves rustling in the wind, and the sound of animals in the forest ahead. He can taste the salt from his sweaty face and can smell the old, dusty scent of the cabin. He can hear the thunder far away in the distance and the sound of rain drumming on the roof. Tears stream down his muddy face as he remembers his childhood when he had a loving family to go to and friends that would always be by his side. He had everything, but now, he had nothing. 

He tried to think of good memories, good thoughts to keep him happy and motivated, though nothing can change the fact that he lost everything after the incident. He wondered what his son and daughter would have been doing. They would be playing in the backyard, smiling and laughing as they chase each other. His wife would be inside, preparing lunch for them, and the smell of warm blueberry pie would fill the whole house. 

The memory fades away and in its place a car wreck on the side of the road. His wife and kids sitting motionless in the passenger seat with their eyes closed, lifeless. How could this have happened? He slowly backs away but accidentally stumbles backwards into the forest, leaves and twigs scratch against his skin. 

His eyes snapped open as the sound of thunder brings him back to reality, now it was just him again. But in the distance, a bright light appears and starts coming closer and closer. Was someone trying to find him? Had people noticed he had been missing? He hears voices calling his name, but he is too weak to yell or walk so instead, he nervously waits for their arrival.

Conflict in South Sudan

WALT : Recognize the impact of a drought and a famine on Families and Communities and describe what happened and describe what happened in South Sudan during the famine in 2017.

In Room 6 we have been learning about the conflict in South Sudan and the impact that it had on Families and Communities. We then had to create a newspaper article about it with a buddy. 

What I found easy was working with a buddy and talking to them. 

What I found hard was coming up with ideas for my writing. 

Next time I will finish on time and stay on task.

Today’s News

Drought and Famine declared in South Sudan in the year 2017. On the year 2017, South Sudan suffered from the lack of food. The UN has declared that there are 1 million malnourished children in South Sudan “I don’t want to leave a single grain on the ground, because the moment I collect it, I can increase the quantity of food for my family.” A South Sudanese mother said. Famine 45% of people in South Sudan are still insecure about their food, Most South Sudanese eat peanuts, which doesn’t have enough vitamins in it, and some have to eat wild berries, both foods lack vitamins and barely has nutritional value. You have to work in order to buy or cook food for your family, you get only 20 cents a day for collecting food, and a small bag of sugar costs 10 cents.

		Drought People in South Sudan lack food, yet their soldiers burn the crops that they could harvest one day. They can’t even plant crops, because not only famine was declared, drought has also embraced South Sudan. Drought has affected and doubled the food insecurity of the Sudanese people. 			In South Sudan an army came and attacked and burnt all there crops and now they don’t have food they have to find as much food on the ground and eat it but Caritas came along and helped them. Nandoor and her Fish Somewhere in Juba, a woman named Nandoor supervises a market stall that sells oil and fish. Nandoor and her Family do not get to keep any of the money they make but they do get to keep the fish scraps and the fish scales. When she gets home she boils the fish dust to make fish soup which is enough to feed her Family. Other Family Members are doing jobs around the market to help out or Family Members who do not have a job are going out to look for wild vegetables. Article by: Alex

Pig the Pug Falls!

WALT : Know how to write a newspaper report.

Pig the Pug falls!

On the 4th of March 2019, Pig the Pug fell out of an open window and broke all his bones.
But was this an accident or was it on purpose? Trevor, who was in the room at the time, said
that Pig the Pug climbed an unstable pile of toys. He then lost his balanced and fell out of
a window.

Trevor

“I’m Innocent!” Trevor said. “He was hogging all the toys! So then he made a pile of the toys, lost his
balanced and fell out of an open window.” Why was the window open and where were the
owners at the time?

Pig the Pug

“He pushed me! Trevor pushed me!” Pig yelled so the whole World can hear. “He’s not Innocent at all!
He did it on purpose!” While he was yelling, Police were checking camera footage to see what really
happened. Unfortunately the cameras were broken and glitched.

Since the Police had no proof that Trevor pushed Pig the Pug out of the window they let Trevor go.
Will we ever know what really happened to Pig the Pug? Is Trevor Innocent or is he guilty?

Descriptive Writing

WALT : Use a range of figurative language to describe a moment in time.

It was a gloomy day. I was cold and soaked with water from head to toe.
The sound of lightning frightens me and the never ending rain was pouring down on
me. I find a house to take shelter. It looked old, abandoned, unstable and overgrown.

I Room 6 we have been making our own picture books. It took weeks of planning, writing and making.

What I Enjoyed was making the pictures.

Next time maybe I could finish faster.

Persuasive Writing

In Room 6 We Wrote Why We Thought Cell Phones Should Or Should Not Be Banned From School.
What I Enjoyed Doing Was Writing Down My Ideas.
Next Time I Will Work Faster and Get It Done Quicker.

Cell Phones Should Not Be Banned From School.

Cell Phones Might Be a Distraction In Class But I Think They Should Not Be Banned From
School.

The First Reason I Think Phones Should Not Be Banned From School Is That If There Is An
Emergency Students Can Call Or Text Their Parents to Let Them Know What’s Happened
and to Tell Them If They’re Safe Or Not. They Can Also Call 111 (Or Whatever Country
They Come From) For Help. Emergencies That Probably Need Phones Are : Fire, Floods,
Dangerous Earthquakes and Real School Lockdowns.

The Second Reason Is Because If You’re Walking Home You Can Tell Your Parents Why
You’reLate or If You’re Ok. Sometimes If You Have Your Phone and You Get Lost You Can
Either CallYour Parents or Use Google Maps. If None Of These Work Then Sometimes Your
Parents CanFind Your Location If You Have Your Phone.

The Third Reason Is Because There Are Apps In the Phone That Can Help You. For
Example : In Class You Can Use It As a Calculator (If the Teacher Says to Use It) and If
There’s a BlackOut You Can Use Your Phone As a Flashlight. Also It Can Tell You the Time,
What Day It Is By theCalendar, the Weather and It Has the Internet Where You Can Search
Up Anything to Help YouWith Class. (If the Teacher Says to.)

In Conclusion I Think Cell Phones Should Not Be Banned From School Because It Can Help
Anyone and Anywhere Whenever You Need It.

Ballad Poem

WALT : Create a Ballad Poem.
In Room 6 we have been learning about Ballad Poems and making our own. A Ballad Poem is when the First Sentence Rhymes with another Sentence and the Second Sentence Rhymes with another and so on. For Example : ABAABB - Ground, Side, Round, Sound, Wide, Tide.
What I enjoyed doing was making my Ballad Poem.
Next time I will stick the my Plan.

Recount Writing

WALT : Create a Recount of what happened in the Holidays.
In Room 6 We have been doing Recounts about our Holidays.
What I will do next time : I will put more Information and make it more exciting!
What I need to work on : Getting my work done faster.


The Gondola

On a bright sunny afternoon me and my Family went on a trip to the Gondola. We traveled by our van. We went there because we had nothing to do during the Holiday.

First we went upstairs to eat. We had chips, wedges, pie and ice-chocolate. After that we were so full!

Next we went downstairs and went onto a ride called The Time Tunnel. The Time Tunnel is a ride that Teaches people about the History of Canterbury. I felt like I was going back in time!

When the ride was over we looked around the Shop. There were so many options to choose from. Some were expensive and some were cheap, some were small and some were big! Then I chose something I wanted… a Time Cube! It was discounted from $20 to $10. I paid $3 and my Dad paid the other $7.

Finally it was time to go home. We were worn out. I felt happy and hoped we can come again next time.

Diameter Poem

WALT : Make a Diameter Poem using descriptive nouns, verbs and adjectives about ANZAC Veterans and What they were fighting for. After finishing our planning we made our own drawings to go with the words in our Diameter Poem so it would stand out.

Something I enjoyed doing is making my poem.

Next time I will work faster and focus on my work.

Fireworks

W.A.L.T. Use Onomatopoeia in Poetry.

Today we learnt about Onomatopoeia words and we had to make a poem
about fireworks using them.

What I found hard was thinking of rhyming words.

What I found easy was choosing the Onomatopoeia words to put in my Poem.

The colourful fireworks pop in the gloomy night sky.

The last BIG firework explodes in the sky.

Awesome Family

WALT: Write an interesting poem about our own Family.

Awesome Family

I think my family is unique and awesome.

My busy bee Mum is good at cooking food and making the house clean.

My fun Dad is good at having fun and helping with the soccer team.

My silent sister likes reading Geronimo Stilton books and is good at being quiet as a mouse.

I am good at maths and playing games in the house.

Even though we are doing different things we are still a Family and we love each other.

Winter Poem

Icy Cold Winter Days

Winter is a time of the year

when frost forms everywhere.

The days are cold, the fire is on.

The animals sleep, the leaves are gone.

People ice skate on the ice.

We stay inside and enjoy hot chocolate that’s nice.

Our parents are splashing water on the car.

People are sliding on the ice afar.

Our families are hiding under the rugs

Keeping warm,  eating chicken soup and getting hugs.

The warm days are left behind,

But it’s warm inside so I don ‘t mind.

For winter is the time when I

sleep in and dream of warm mince pies.
